Wordless Book

Charles Spurgeon used a wordless book in January 11, 1866 when speaking to a group of orphans. It's use quickly spread to cross-cultural contexts. This image was published in January 1892 by China Inland Mission. It documents open air preaching in which the wordless book is being used to explain the gospel.

I recall my sons making these in preschool. The black represents our human tendency to "do the wrong thing" which is sin: dark, hidden, death. Red is the blood of Jesus (divine, blameless, perfect love expressed) poured out to cover our selfish tendencies. White is our gleaming righteousness, God-given (it's His gift) to set us free from selfishness. The gold is our destiny, Heaven, where our treasures are stored.
